PVD Fest is this weekend!

June 2, 2016 – June 5th, 2016

PVD Fest is a festival that allows visitors to truly experience the creative, art-oriented city of Providence, Rhode Island. This multi-art, four-day festival completely transforms the city, taking place at historical and unique venues. Participating art installations, musicians/bands, restaurants, museums, libraries, etc. work together to create an event showcasing the best of the Creative Capital. Family Fun

Metlife Family Friday – Friday, June 3rd, 2016
Providence Children’s Museum, 5 PM – 8 PM

Families are invited to explore and play at Providence Children’s Museum free of charge! The museum will be free on Friday evenings from 5 PM to 8 PM, sponsored by the Metlife Foundation.

Toddler Try-it: Mermaid Mud – Friday, June 3rd, 2016
Providence Children’s Museum, 10 AM – 12 PM

Every Friday morning, Providence Children’s Museum encourages toddlers to engage in hands-on art and science activities. This week is “Mermaid Mud” where toddlers will be able to decorate playscapes with shells, gems, and sea creatures!

Food Truck Friday – Friday, June 3rd, 2016
Carousel Village at Roger Williams Park, 5 PM to 8 PM

People of all ages will delight in “Food Truck Friday” held at Carousel Park in Roger Williams Park! From 5 to 8 PM, local food trucks will be open for dinner while customers enjoy live music and other activities. Pony rides will be offered, in addition to Hasbro’s Boundless Playground and the park carousel being open for use. There will also be a beer garden for the adults to enjoy while they take in the beautiful scenery. There is no cost for entry, but pony/carousel rides and food/beverage will be an additional cost.

Fairy Houses – Saturday, June 4, 2016 & Sunday, June 5th, 2016
Providence Children’s Museum, 11 AM to 2 PM

Children and their families are invited to Providence Children’s Museum to create tiny fairy dwellings of natural and found materials. All ages welcome.

Roger Williams Park Zoo Animal Feedings
Spring Weekend Harbor Seal Encounters – Thursday, June 2nd; Saturday, June 4th; Sunday, June 5th at 2 PM
Giraffe Feedings – Daily 11:30 to 12 PM

People of all ages are welcome to Roger Williams Zoo for animal feedings! Giraffe feedings take place daily, while seal feedings are offered on the weekends in the spring. Standard zoo admission to attend giraffe feedings, but please RSVP. Seal Encounters are $20 for members, and $25 for non-members.

Birds from Down Under – Thursday, June 2nd – Sunday, June 5th, 2016
Roger Williams Park Zoo10:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Take a trip to Roger Williams Zoo to visit with more than 450 bird species native to Australia, including grass parakeets, cockatiels and various other parrot species. Each visitor will receive a seed stick and is free to feed the exotic birds while engaging in conversation about their habitats and the environmental challenges they face. Admission is an additional $3 to zoo admission.

Concerts

Dark Star Orchestra – Thursday, June 2nd, 2016
Lupo’s Heartbreak Hotel, 8 PM

For the past 15 years, the Dark Star Orchestra has continued the sound and feel of the Grateful Dead concert experience. At any given show, the Orchestra will follow a set list from the Grateful Dead‘s 30 year tour history or create their own unique mix of tributes to the famed band. The Orchestra hopes to pay tribute to one of the most famous bands in history while also improvising on The Grateful Dead’s songs, allowing for evolution in the distinct and beloved style to be enjoyed by young and old. City of Providence & 95.5 WBRU kick off  2016 Summer Concert Series with Vulgarrity, Ra Ra Riot, and The Heavy – Friday, June 3rd, 2016
Alex and Ani Center – Show at 7 PM

The City of Providence & 95.5 WBRU are kicking off their Summer Concert Series this weekend with Vulgarrity, Ra Ra Riot,The Heavy as part of the PVD Fest! This free event will be held at the Alex and Ani City Center in downtown Providence. All ages welcome.

One Providence Experience – Saturday, June 4th, 2016
The Ruins, 6 PM

One Providence Experience is a free and open event as part of PVD Fest in the shadow of the ruins between 130 Westminster and 35 Weybosset. Performances by Screaming Females, What Cheer? Brigade, Naomi Shelton & The Gospel Queens, Debo Band, Rough Francis, Last Good Tooth, and Lovesick. Special performances by HumanBeast, The Low Anthem, Black Pus, Death Vessel, and an after midnight dance party with Music Please. There will be celebratory toasts in between acts. The event is hosted by Roz Raskin and Peter Glantz. All ages welcome.

The Palmer Squares East Coast Tour – Saturday, June 4th, 2016
The Fete Music Hall, Doors at 8:30

The Palmer Squares East Coast Tour 2016 will be at the Fête Music Hall in Providence on June 4th. The show features Shlick Smit, LoudMouth, Curt Sharp (plus support by Big G’s and Lingo of Grind Mode and DJ John Gotem on the 1s and 2s). Originally from Chicago, IL, The Palmer Squares have been active since 2010, releasing a series of high-energy mixes with reference-laden lyrics. They actively tour around the West Coast, Chicago, and have even appeared at SXSW in Austin, TX. Their second full-length album, Planet of the Shapes, was released in Spring 2016. Tickets here. Portals: The History of the Future Exhibition – Thursday, June 2rd – Sunday, June 5th, 2016
Providence Public Library – 12:30 PM to 5:30 PM on Thursday/Friday, 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM Saturday, 1:00 to 5 PM on Sunday

The Providence Public Library is offering a new exhibition called “Portals: The History of the Future“, which will “highlight the material trails left by the people of the past as they looked to the future.” Visitors will be able to take a look at what the future looked like to our predecessors, and how it varies greatly from the reality we live in today. Admission is free for all ages.

All of Everything: Todd Oldham Fashion – Thursday, June 2nd – Sunday, June 5th, 2016
Rhode Island School of Design Museum, 10 AM to 5 PM

The “All of Everything” exhibition features original designs by the talented Todd Oldham. His creative designs, well known embellishment work, superb craftsmanship, and unique flair dominated fashion in the 1990s. From a Swarovski crystal-encrusted ensemble to a Pantone non-repeating print design, this exhibition offers 65 complete ensembles in a wide variety of styles, all labors of Oldham’s “intensive design process” and attention to detail. Rhode Island School of Design Annual Graduate Thesis Presentation– Thursday, June 2nd to Saturday, June 4th 2016
RI Convention Center – 12 PM to 5 PM

Rhode Island School of Design’s annual graduate thesis presentation exhibits the work of 225 students, with creations in various fields such as Architecture, Ceramics, Digital + Media, Furniture Design, Glass, Graphic Design, Industrial Design, Interior Architecture, Jewelry + Metalsmithing, Landscape Architecture, Painting, Photography, Printmaking, Sculpture, Textiles and Teaching + Learning in Art + Design. Viewers are welcome to explore the work of up-and-coming artists and designers while their work showcases their artistic journey and creative process. Admission is free for all ages.

Woody Allen’s Bullets Over Broadway will be at PPAC throughout the weekend. The story, critically acclaimed as “Musical Theater Gold” and “a Fun Machine From Start to Finish,” tells the story of a young playwright who accepts a mobster trying to please his showgirl girlfriend. Trinity Rep proudly presents: Oklahoma! The possibilities for love, riches, and happiness encourage main characters Curly and Jud to head west at the turn of the 20th century in Oklahoma! Oklahoma! is a story about the men and women who followed their excitement and wonder to a new land, and the trials, tears, laughter, and dancing along their journey. Tickets here.

Trinity Rep Presents: Late Night Catechism The Dowling Theater

Trinity Rep is proud to present: Late Night Catechism, an interactive comedy show that will surely bring back deeply buried memories of catholic school. Jerusalem – The Wilbury Group Theatre

Jerusalem, by Jez Butterworth and directed by Josh Short, will be playing at The Wilbury Group Theater this weekend! Jerusalem is a a story about Johnny “Rooster” Byron, a torn and wanted man on St. George’s Day: his son wants to go to the fair, officials want to evict him from his home, an enemy wants to give him a “serious kicking,” and his friends want his ample supply of alcohol.
