City of Providence Mayor Angel Taveras, the Department of Art, Culture + Tourism, Anchor Recovery Community Center, The Providence Center, and Sojourner House invite you to visit the Gallery at City Hall for its newest exhibit Quilted Together: Art & Community Well-Being, a group show spotlighting the Recovery Quilt Project & the Sojourner House’s Voices Unfold project . The show will be on view in the Gallery at City Hall March 25th – May 12th with an opening reception on April 30th from 5pm – 7pm.

The Recovery Quilt Project is a collection of over 100 felt squares created during the annual Rally 4 Recovery by a person in recovery or family member who currently has a loved one in recovery due to drug or alcohol addiction. Each felt square tells a different story: a teen in recovery and thankful for life, a father reunited with his family after a long struggle, a friend’s life tragically cut short due to addiction. At the conclusion of each Rally 4 Recovery the individual felt squares are sewn together to form a quilt, telling a new story in the process. The quilt is then displayed at various events throughout the year and at the following year’s Rally 4 Recovery.

Voices Unfold engaged clients of Sojourner House in a six-week art and writing experience led by Alyssa Holland Short, Providence-based artist and art teacher Alyssa worked directly with clients from Sojourner House in Providence to build a collection of personal, healing artworks through writing, drawing, painting, and collage. The experience assisted participants in self-exploration, growth, and healing through creative expression. The title Voices Unfold references the acts of making and interacting with books. At the culmination of the program, the clients bound their artwork into artist books and paper quilts.

About Rally 4 Recovery: The Rally 4 Recovery is an annual festival organized by a coalition consisting of persons in recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs, their family members, friends and allies. It is a community building effort, seeking to strengthen the bonds among people in recovery, their family members, friends and allies and increase the number of supports available to them in the community. The Rally also serves to foster a culture of recovery in Rhode Island, supporting the belief that everyone has a right to, and is capable of, recovery of addiction to alcohol and other drugs.

About Voices Unfold Project: Voices Unfold engaged clients of Sojourner House in a six-month art and writing experience led by The Hive Archive’s Executive Director, Alyssa Holland Short. Alyssa, an illustrator and arts educator, worked directly with clients from Sojourner House in Woonsocket and Providence to build a portfolio of personal artworks through writing, drawing, painting, and printmaking. At the culmination of the program, the clients bound their artwork into artist books.
