Museums

“Grace and Gravity” Deborah Baronas – Friday, September 16th to Sunday, September 25th, 2016
ArtProv Gallery– 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Deborah studied textile design and painting at the Rhode Island School of Design. She often combines translucent overlays of textiles and glass with her drawings and paintings in order to animate the figures and abstract elements of water and air, inviting the viewer into the physical space. At the exhibit, Deborah will be displaying paintings, drawings and interactive fabric installations from two of her new collections featuring swimmers and dancers, which represent a departure from her previous studies of work and culture.

“Passenger with Horizon” Scott Lawrence – Saturday, September 17th to Saturday, October 15th, 2016
Grin Contemporary Gallery– 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM

In Passenger with Horizon, Lawrence employs a diverse range of quotidian objects seemingly plucked from his daily routine—the train ride home, the corner of the office, the floor of a shopping mall. However, this is where the familiarity ends. Through careful attention and experimentation, Lawrence recasts these often mundane subjects as new forms – sometimes sadly awkward, sometimes positively elegant – and confuses their placement on the cultural spectrum of high to low. Objects are presented as low-stake disruptions and reverberate with an aimless, transient energy. But they also read as allegorical case studies, phantoms of metaphysical inquiry testing Positivism’s triple mantra of Description, Control and Prediction.

Theatre

Plaza Suite– Friday, September 16th, 2016 to Sunday, October 9th, 2016
Newport Playhouse and Cabaret Restaurant, 11:00 AM to 6:00 PM

Hilarity abounds in this portrait of three couples successively occupying a suite at the Plaza. A suburban couple take the suite while their house is being painted and it turns out to be the one in which they honeymooned 23 (or was it 24?) years before and was yesterday the anniversary, or is it today? This wry tale of marriage in tatters is followed by the exploits of a Hollywood producer who, after three marriages, is looking for fresh fields. He calls a childhood sweetheart, now a suburban housewife, for a little sexual diversion. Over the years she has idolized him from afar and is now more than the match he bargained for. The last couple is a mother and father fighting about the best way to get their daughter out of the bathroom and down to the ballroom where guests await her or as Mother yells, “I want you to come out of that bathroom and get married!”

Tickets are available now, and range from $20 to $59.95.

Beowulf– Friday, September 16th, 2016 to Sunday, October 9th, 2016
The Chace Theater

Based on one of the most famous pieces of literature of all time, Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage is a raucous rock ‘n’ roll re-telling of the blood-soaked Old English poem. With music by Dave Malloy (Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812), the swaggering hero Beowulf defends the great hall of Heorot against the monster Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and a fire-breathing dragon…as a panel of academics overanalyzes his every move. With music The New York Times called “catchy and pop-infused with echoes of Tom Waits,” Beowulf: A Thousand Years of Baggage is the epic legend seen in a visceral, brutal, and tender new light.

Tickets are available now.
