WaterFire – Saturday, September 24th, 2016
A WaterFire “Chinese Culture Night” Lighting sponsored by Confucius Institute & US-China Institute at Bryant University and Nortek.
Sunset at 6:38 PM, Lighting time is 6:53 PM and fires stay lit until 12:30 AM

All Full WaterFire installations light up over eighty braziers from Waterplace Park to Memorial/South Main Street Park on scheduled evenings. Lighting occurs shortly after sunset and the event continues until half past midnight.

Family Fun

Open Stage – Friday, September 23rd, 2016
Everett Stage, 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM

Everett presents Open Stage, a monthly event for young performers featuring house dance troupe Case Closed! and hosted by Everett’s Sokeo Ros & Bianca Bevilacqua. The aim is to give local youth performers a forum to show their talents in front of a live audience. Each show will feature a different headliner and local hip hop theater troupe Case Closed! Audience members will have the opportunity to sign up for a 5-minute performance slot before each show.

*THE SHOW STARTS WITH FAMILY-FRIENDLY MATERIAL. AFTER A SHORT INTERMISSION, THE REMAINDER OF THE PROGRAM MAY CONTAIN MORE MATURE CONTENT.

 

Museums

Better World by Design Conference – Friday, September 23rd, 2016 to Sunday, September 25th, 2016
Brown Campus

Better World by Design is a student-led initiative at Brown University and Rhode Island School of Design that celebrates interdisciplinary collaboration between designers, educators, innovators, and learners. We envision a world where design-thinking is accessible to everyone in order to catalyze positive change on a local and global scale. During the year, we facilitate workshops, panels, and discussions that engage in and promote design. Our year builds up to an annual 3-day conference that reinvigorates these ideas and inspires us to continue these conversations.

Must register in order to attend. Tickets range from $25 to $245

 

Imagination Playground – Saturday, September 24th, 2016 and Sunday, September 25th, 2016
Providence Children’s Museum, 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM

Kids invent their own ways to play as they stack and build with huge blue foam blocks, wheels, spools, tubes and a variety of loose parts. Construct castles and forts, invent interesting sculptures and more!
Underwritten by Dominion Foundation.

Admission: Free with Museum admission of $9.00 per person; free for members.

Brews & Blues Beer Tasting – Friday, September 23, 2016
Windjammer, 6:00 PM – 9:00 PM

The Annual “Brews and Blues” Beer Tasting event features live music, food from local restaurants and markets paired with over 30 different beers from around the world. Come and enjoy a full night of brews, blues, and fun at the Windjammer in Misquamicut.

Providence Improv Fest – Thursday, September 22nd, 2016 to Saturday, September 24th, 2016

This year’s Fest will feature top improv comedy troupes from throughout the country!
The FEST remains dedicated to showcasing a broad spectrum of theater artists who excel at creating scenes, characters, and situations in the moment.
The FEST will, as always, offer shows by top performers in the local, regional, and national improv comedy scenes. There will also be multiple workshops and a variety of amusements and good times.

2016 Cultural Gala & Village Leader Awards – Friday, September 23rd, 2016
Renaissance of Providence Downtown Hotel, 6:00 PM  to 10:00 PM

Join us as we celebrate Higher Ground International with African-inspired dinner, music, dancing, live auction and fashion show. The event’s theme is “Bringing the Village Together!” The evening will focus on the Village Leader Awards (VLA) where leaders in the community will be recognized for their dedication and work impacting the African community.

Ms. Massa A. Washington, a journalist by trade and a women’s rights and civil society activist by passion, will join the event with a keynote presentation. Washington is a member of the Liberian Women Initiative (LWI), which has been at the vanguard of peace advocacy in Liberia. She is a former Truth & Reconciliation Commissioner of Liberia, and has represented the women of Liberia at peace conferences around the continent.

The gala will also feature a lively fashion show of African textile designs manufactured by Higher Ground’s social enterprise, Broken Pieces. Produced by Yemi Sekoni, owner of Donahue Models & Talent, the show will be the event’s apex celebration of Higher Ground International.

Bobcat Goldthwait – Friday, September 23rd, 2016 and Saturday, September 24th, 2016
The Comedy Connection, 8:00 PM (Fri), 7:30 PM (Sat) and 10:00 PM (Sat)

Goldthwait is no stranger to entertainment and is one of the most recognizable comedians in show business today. Bobcat’s stand up features hilarious riffs on politics, divorce and his career as a writer and director of film. His show is a wild ride of fun finding the funny no matter what the situation.

Since his first appearance on David Letterman at the age of 20, Bobcat has expanded his resume, directing movies and sharing his behind the camera talents on shows such as; “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” “The Demetri Martin show,” “The Chappelle Show,” “The Man Show,” “Maron,” and “Crank Yankers.” Best known for his unforgettable movies that were huge in the 80’s, Bobcat has also starred in several HBO specials and a slew of television appearances too numerous to mention. Bob continues to push the envelope with his unique brand of humor headlining major comedy clubs across the country.
