WaterFire – Saturday, November 5th, 2016
A WaterFire “Salute to Veterans” lighting sponsored by Walmart, Bank of America, National Grid and Dominion Power and Energy.
Sunset is at 5:34 PM, and fires stay lit until 11 PM
All Full WaterFire installations light up over eighty braziers from Waterplace Park to Memorial/South Main Street Park on scheduled evenings. Lighting occurs shortly after sunset and the event continues until half past midnight.

SALON: Akiko Busch discusses the way that essay form promotes a kind of collaborative thinking, accommodating both sciences and humanities.
Mining the works of groundbreaking naturalists for their ruminations on the relationship of science, literature, and human emotion, she looks for evidence of how the practice of citizen science, as it is practiced by naturalists today, generates a new manner of observation and documentation.

Living in Barcelona, Spain, Fraenkel was inspired by the designs and mosaics of Antoni Gaudi. He had always been drawn to Persian and Ottoman miniatures and Islamic art and architecture. Since his time in Turkey in the 1970s, the eastern visual arts traditions called to him and he responded. Fraenkel’s pen-and-ink drawings reflect his deep interest in design. Flat planes of color are organized in shapes that suggest ellipses and triangles. Connected by lyrical lines, they dance in precision across the paper. Other works are more painterly, richly colored with a clear influence of mosaics. These pieces are small and jewel-like, evoking nature without ever referencing it directly.

Ben Minus Zoe Minus Ben is a science fiction story of sorts that involves a man named Ben, who has been having visions of a girl his entire life. However, she doesn’t seem to exist. He assumes he is crazy…until clues start to surface that she may indeed exist. As he starts to unravel, Ben follows the clues towards the girl he dreams about…his one true love.

One of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s finest works, THE KING AND I boasts a score which features such beloved classics as “Getting To Know You,” “I Whistle a Happy Tune,” “Hello Young Lovers,” “Shall We Dance,” and “Something Wonderful.” Set in 1860’s Bangkok, the musical tells the story of the unconventional and tempestuous relationship that develops between the King of Siam and Anna Leonowens, a British schoolteacher whom the modernist King, in an imperialistic world, brings to Siam to teach his many wives and children.

Festival Ballet Providence’s (FBP) acclaimed Black Box Theatre series Up Close on Hope will feature one of the most popular works by iconic choreographer George Balanchine, in addition to two vastly different works by resident choreographer Viktor Plotnikov. The program will also include a pair of works by former Boston Ballet principal dancer Yury Yanowsky and a new collaboration between company dancer Ty Parmenter and storyteller Valerie Tutson. This popular Black Box series gives audiences a perspective on dance unlike any other, providing an experience that is both intimate and breathtaking.

AOS, Artist Open Studios, is a unique experience where artist’s open their studios to the public. Each artist studio is a unique space that embraces the mind and heart of the artist. It is within this space that one learns much about the artist ~ how they create, where they draw their inspiration, and even why they create. Studios range from old renovated barns, to new rustic barns, to uniquely-designed studios within their homes. Learn first-hand about the techniques of wheel-thrown ceramics, glassblowing, sculpture, watercolor painting, jewelry design, oil painting and photography. See original artwork being created, observe demonstrations, ask questions directly to the artists, and even try your hand with the art materials. Artwork will also be available for purchase.
