About Kala Farnham: With a broad array of musical influences, Kala’s songwriting caters to a wide audience, characterized by elements of celtic and traditional folk, art pop, and jazz. She has been praised for her intricate piano work, enlightening yet relatable lyricism, and versatile vocal styling. She cites her classical background as a prominent influence, inspired by the passion of the romantics, the musical landscapes of the impressionists, and the bold experimentation of 20th century composers. Of modern day performers, she is most impacted by the piano techniques of Regina Spektor, Billy Joel, and Tori Amos, as well as the insightful lyricism and traditional songwriting style of 70s folk artists Joan Baez and Joni Mitchell.
About Heather Rose: Winner of 4 Providence Phoenix Best Music Poll Awards, including BEST FEMALE VOCALIST, BEST SONG: “Here Again”, and BEST ROOTS ACT, Heather Rose’s melodic, magnetic vocals follow in the tradition of Sheryl Crow, Liz Phair, and Aimee Mann. Her lyrics, according to the Northeast Performer are, “…clever and honest and her delivery is pure energy”. Boston’s The Noise, where Heather took home Best Female Singer in 2001 states she “…has a stage presence that transcends genre. She can sing sweetly or lustily, scream righteously, and draw the audience in. Her songs are folky, gently twangy, and lovely. (And catchy!)”.
About Kristen and J: Kristen, a self-proclaimed “book worm” and published fiction writer, writes most of the lyrics for Kristen and J. She is inspired by everything; literature, movies, TV, news, history, people walking by on the street, dreams, and good dessert. A musician for over twenty-five years, J has played in folk, punk, surf and Bob Dylan tribute bands. From the age of five when he began imitating drumbeats on Beatles records, J began a life-long love of music. He honed his drumming skills for the earlier part of his life. Sometime during his high school years, J realized that the guitar players usually attracted the ladies, so he also took up guitar.
About the Rank Strangers: The Rank Strangers are original folk fusion country rockers playing their very own unique brand of grass in the rank style since 2000. The members include Thomas Duksta on mandolin, guitar and vocals, Skeeter McFarland on guitar and vocals, Pete Vendettuoli on banjo and vocals and D. Gifford Carnes.
