Take a walk down Benefit Street and discover more about the history of one of Providence’s oldest streets. The Rhode Island Historical Society’s Summer Walk Series “Benefit Street: A Mile of History” will take you on a tour of Benefit Street, where you can learn about the history of Providence and the significance of the street. Created in the mid-18th century “for the benefit of all,” this colonial thoroughfare shows off an enviable collection of 18th and 19th century wood-frame houses. Although the street gives the appearance of being a museum mile, it is actually a vital urban neighborhood enhanced by on-going preservation efforts since the 1950s. Walking tours are available every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at 11 a.m. from June 17th through October 30th. For more information about tickets and starting locations, check out the Rhode Island Historical Society website.
