Within Providence is The Providence Rink’s newest art installation: a free public mural painting! It will be presented with featured sound installation “Transit Lines” on Saturday, July 12th starting at 12:00 noon through 10:00pm. This interactive art installation is created by The Studios at Unit 2.
Artists from all over Rhode Island have designed a comprehensive map of Providence on 10,000 square feet of vinyl that will be laid out on the concrete surface of the Rink. Throughout the day and evening, the public will be invited to “color in” different sections with valuable memories and experiences. “The finished piece will be an exercise in community relationships, free representation, and collective memory: a massive forum for the city to reflect its culture.” envisioned by Grant Thompson Archer, creator of “Within Providence.”
Sound engineer and artist, John Budrow, will be building “Transit Lines” using audiotape that will utilize the acoustics provided by the wind and the Rink’s architecture to “create soft noises that mimic the sound of perceived transit as well as cast shadows over the mural…”
The Providence Rink will officially open for public participation at 12noon. Live performances begin at 4:30pm with the ProvSlam Youth Poetry Team kicking off the formal reception event. Rhode Island bands including Ravi Shavi and The Viennagram, take stage at 6:00pm through 10:00pm. The Trinity Brewhouse Beer Garden and food trucks will be rink-side for the reception event. This event is free to all patrons. The rain date for this event is scheduled for Saturday, July 26th.
“Within Providence” is sponsored by Dick Blick Art Materials, Lamar Advertising, the Providence Parks and Recreation Department and the City of Providence.
