The Manton Avenue Project Presents – Once Upon A Time

“Kids bring their favorite books to life in new play festival” at AS220 Black Box

Once Upon a Time: The Favorite Book Play Festival is the culminating production of The Manton Avenue Project’s PLAY-IT-AGAIN program, an afterschool playwriting course held at MAP’s Clubhouse in Olneyville. Ten 4th and 5th grade playwrights will each write a play based on or inspired by their favorite books and literary characters.

Come make a joyful noise with us as Rebekah Zabinski hosts a melodious hour of music-making using a variety of instruments and hands-on activities. Rebekah’s extensive background in music will inspire young musicians to get creative and sing and groove to the beat!

This weekend in celebration of National Engineers Week, kids investigate the world of engineering at fun-filled activity stations with members of the Society of Women Engineers. Experiment with electrical conductivity, investigate the power of pulley systems, and more!

Family Friendly Comedy Show

This interactive improv show welcomes voluntary audience participation!  You can participate in one of three ways: Applaud at a scene you like, yell out fantastic suggestions, or if you feel you’re ready, jump up and get involved with us on stage!!! 

Artists’ Exchange Family Performance Series

Families are invited to join for the Family Performance Series, perfect for all ages, from the young to the young at heart. This weekend is Tandem Tellers. As “Mrs. Frost” and “Lady Winter” Anne Marie and Cindy spin tales of snow, frost and hot chocolate.

Upcoming Events June 10-14

This week celebrates the anniversary of the attack and burning of the HMS Gaspee in Providence. Throughout the weekend, there will be several events to commemorate this day including, guided tours and a Full WaterFire lighting. Also, this weekend is the Providence International Arts Festival, an experience like no other! Come join us for performances and art installations throughout the city Thursday-Sunday.

2015 Festival of Historic Houses 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. Since the first Festival, more than 50 years ago, The Providence Preservation Society has showcased contemporary living in historic homes.

Imagination Playground Providence Children’s Museum presents Imagination Playground where kids invent their own ways to play as they stack and build with huge blue foam blocks of all shapes and sizes. Event is from 10:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.

Rock ‘N’ Roll Yard Sale The Providence Public Library downtown will host a Rock ‘N’ Roll Yard Sale from 12:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. Enjoy live music and dj while browsing the vendors’ tables.

Gaspee Day at the John Brown House John Brown, the Providence merchant who promoted the attack on the Gaspee, later built and resided in a magnificent 18th century mansion. The John Brown House Museum at 52 Power Street will be open from 10 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. with guided tours at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Self-guided audio tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We will emphasize John Brown’s role as organizer of the Gaspee event and will make sure that everyone sees the painting in the museum that records the burning of the Gaspee. 10:00 a.m- 7:30 p.m.

Gaspee Day at the Governor Stephen Hopkins House Make time to see The Governor Stephen Hopkins House located at 15 Hopkins Street (off Benefit Street) and open for tours between 1:00 and 9:30 p.m. Admission is free, donations are always welcome. 1:00 p.m.- 9:30 p.m.

Waterfire: Full Lighting  Sunset: 8:21 p.m. Lighting time: 8:46 p.m. The fires will remain lit until 12:30 a.m.

Hao Ni “Ghost Hit Wall” Reception Yellow Peril Gallery is pleased to present “Ghost Hit Wall” by Hao Ni, featuring an eclectic series of video, mixed media installations, sculptures, and drawings from June 11 – July 19, 2015. The opening reception is Saturday, June 13 from 6PM – 9PM.

Presented by The Wilbury Theatre Group, FRINGEPVD is Providence’s 1st Annual Fringe Festival, bringing over 50 performing and visual artists from Providence, Boston, New York, and beyond together in over 30 performances in 5 venues from July 23-26.

Storytime and Art in the Park: BIG NAZO, 10:30am

Come to Storytime and Art in the Park: BIG NAZO this Thursday, July 24th and enjoy child-centered art from local performers and artists! Then, join Ricky Katowicz for “Art in the Park: Maurice Sendak’s Wild World!” free face painting, a mobile playground, and the free green grass of the park keep kids of all ages entertained. Grab lunch from the food truck market for a picnic in the park!

Music Series & Beer Garden: An Afternoon with Girls Rock! Rhode Island, 4:30pm

This Thursday, July 24th, come to an afternoon performance of Girls Rock! Rhode Island from 4:30-7:30pm. Featuring special guests Glttrghost and Neon Boots. Join the Burnside Park Music Series for an awesome showcase of Girl’s Rock! Rhode Island’s participants, as well as the world debuts of Glttrghost and Neon Boots.

From photography and sculpture, paintings and hand-crafted ceramics, to jewelry and specialty textiles, the WaterFire Arts Festival Plaza features a wide range of locally crafted artisan wares to exhibit for sale to WaterFire’s visitors.

Downtown Sundown Concert Series, 7:00pm

Bring a lawn chair, a blanket, and maybe even a picnic dinner and sit on the lawn at the beautiful Roger Williams National Memorial and enjoy FREE concerts by some of the best songwriters Rhode Island has to offer. Check out performances by Jesse and Jack Gauthier, Dan Lilley and Scatman, Lisa Markovich, and Bethel Steele.

WaterFire Full Lighting: Gilead Sciences, 8:11pm

On Saturday, July 26th 2014, Gilead Sciences will sponsor a WaterFire Providence full lighting. The lighting will begin at sunset, around 8:11pm. We will have resource fairs and screening tents for Hepatitis C located on College Street, in collaboration with RI Defeats Hepatitis C.

Join us on the Greenway every Sunday through September 14th from 10 am – 4 pm on South Water Street.The Flea has a vintage theme. Antiques, collectibles, vintage wares, vintage jewelry or clothing, upcycled or recycled items can be found at The Flea. A small and carefully selected group of local artists’ and artisans’ wares, and local, independent service providers can also be found at The Flea.

Bike Providence: Cyclovía, 12:00pm

Join Mayor Angel Taveras and the City of Providence for a car-free event that will open up Broadway for walking, skating, running, cycling and exercise. Free and open to the public! Featuring Zumba, bike activities, street vendors and more!

Opera Providence’s Opera in the Park, 5:00pm

The Sunday “Opera in the Park” series will be held at Hopkins Park at the intersection of Branch Avenue & Charles Street in Providence, RI. Hopkins Park provides a great venue with plenty of room for families to enjoy a free concert. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the music! Sure to be a great, fun-filled event for the whole family.

Guided Architectural Library Building Tour, 10:30pm

Join the Providence Public Library for a guided architectural tour of the historic 1900 library building at 10:30 am every first and third Tuesday of each month. Please meet at 225 Washington Street entrance. The tour will last approximately one hour.

Wednesday, July 16th

Yoga in the Park, 12:00pm

FREE, Five-week Yoga Class Starts Wednesday June 4th at noon. Please join the yoga lessons and find your center in the center of the beautiful urban oasis that is Roger Williams National Memorial. These classes will go every Wednesday from 12:00pm-1:00pm until June 30th. Yoga is known to keep you fit, and what better way to benefit from that than with your entire community on a lovely summer day in the park?

“Fiber Works” Exhibit, 5:00pm

ArtProv gallery’s newest exhibit, “FIber Works,” will run from July 14, 2014, to August 2, 2014, and will feature the textile works of four artists: Liz Alpert Fay, Michelle Sirois-Silver, Mary Jane Andreozzi and Judith Larzelere. An opening reception will be held during Gallery Night Providence on July 17 from 5 p.m. – 9 p.m. The gallery will also be open on the following days during the Handweavers Guild of Americas Convergence in Providence: July 14 – July 17 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. The gallery is also open by appointment.
