Intermission Exhibit

A temporary pause in a performance, a break from business as usual.

December 16, 2016 – June 30, 2016

Introduction:

This informal presentation of paintings and objects from our early 12th to late 19th century European collection offers opportunities for chance encounters and unintentional juxtapositions as we renovate our main European Galleries.

When the European Galleries reopen in fall 2017, the collection will be displayed to reflect the RISD Museum’s unique position as a center of activity for artists, designers, and makers of all kinds. This continues the RISD Museum’s reinterpretation project initiated in 2009, which has included new galleries for ancient Greek and Roman, ancient Egyptian, and Asian art, as well as costumes and textiles.

Exhibition:

During the renovation of the Museum’s European Galleries, select works from the 1100s through the 1800s are on view in this open-storage presentation, offering opportunities for chance encounters and unintentional juxtapositions. Information about each work—including its maker, medium, and date.

When the European Galleries reopen in Fall 2017, the collection will be displayed to reflect the issues, materials, and processes that shaped artistic production. Works of art from the Middle East and Asia will appear alongside European works, demonstrating how artists translated new knowledge about the world. This continues the RISD Museum’s reinterpretation project, initiated in 2009, which has included new installations for art from Asia, ancient Greece and Rome, and ancient Egypt, as well as for costumes and textiles.
