Late Shift (Germany, 2013, 20 mins)
Director: Sigrun Matthiesen
Before becoming a famous writer, Nobel-Prize winner and controversial public figure Gunter Grass has been a visual artist and a craftsman. This early passion for the concrete and physical is a vital source of his creativity until today. At the age of 83, he produces etchings to illustrate ‘Dog Years’, a novel he wrote half a century ago. Working in close collaboration with the fine-arts printer Fritz Margull, their conversations convey their love for the craft, their expertise, and the mutual understanding of a longstanding companionship. The images they create have accompanied and haunted Grass all his life – telling what words can’t describe.
