Family Fun

Metlife Family Friday – Friday, June 10th, 2016
Providence Children’s Museum, 5 PM – 8 PM

Families are invited to explore and play at Providence Children’s Museum free of charge! The museum will be free on Friday evenings from 5 PM to 8 PM, sponsored by the Metlife Foundation.

Toddler Try-it: Mermaid Mud – Friday, June 10th, 2016
Providence Children’s Museum, 10 AM – 12 PM

Every Friday morning, Providence Children’s Museum encourages toddlers to engage in hands-on art and science activities. This week is “Mermaid Mud” where toddlers will be able to decorate playscapes with shells, gems, and sea creatures!

Rigamajig – Saturday, June 11th & Sunday, June 12th, 2016
Providence Children’s Museum, 11 AM to 2 PM

Children are invited to Providence Children’s Museum to invent robots, structures, carts and other creative contraptions with a large-scale building kit featuring wooden planks, wheels, pulleys, rope, and nuts and bolts.

Food Truck Friday – Friday, June 10th, 2016
Carousel Village at Roger Williams Park, 5 PM to 8 PM

People of all ages will delight in “Food Truck Friday” held at Carousel Park in Roger Williams Park! From 5 to 8 PM, local food trucks will be open for dinner while customers enjoy live music and other activities. Pony rides will be offered, in addition to Hasbro’s Boundless Playground and the park carousel being open for use. There will also be a beer garden for the adults to enjoy while they take in the beautiful scenery. There is no cost for entry, but pony/carousel rides and food/beverage will be an additional cost.

Roger Williams Park Zoo Animal Feedings
Spring Weekend Harbor Seal Encounters – Thursday, June 9nd; Saturday, June 11th; Sunday, June 12th at 2 PM
Giraffe Feedings – Daily 11:30 to 12 PM

People of all ages are welcome to Roger Williams Zoo for animal feedings! Giraffe feedings take place daily, while seal feedings are offered on the weekends in the spring. Standard zoo admission to attend giraffe feedings, but please RSVP. Seal Encounters are $20 for members, and $25 for non-members.

Birds from Down Under – Thursday, June 2nd – Sunday, June 5th, 2016
Roger Williams Park Zoo10:30 AM to 4:30 PM

Take a trip to Roger Williams Zoo to visit with more than 450 bird species native to Australia, including grass parakeets, cockatiels and various other parrot species. Each visitor will receive a seed stick and is free to feed the exotic birds while engaging in conversation about their habitats and the environmental challenges they face. Admission is an additional $3 to zoo admission.

USA Gymnastics Championships – Thursday, June 9th-Sunday, June 12th, 2016
Dunkin’ Donuts Center, TBA

The 2016 USA Gymnastics Championships will be held at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center this week! The competition for acrobatic, rhythmic, and trampoline gymnastics will be held at junior and elite levels. The rhythmic Championships will also be the Olympic selection for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro (as will the trampoline Championships, pending USA’s qualification in the category). Come see amazing performances by future Olympians!

Portuguese Heritage Festival & Day of Portugal – Alex and Ani Center
Saturday, June 11th, 2016 at 5:30-11 PM, Sunday, June 12th, 2016 at 1 PM

The Portuguese Heritage Festival/Day of Portugal are events to celebrate the holiday, Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas (Day of Portugal, Camões and the Portuguese Communities), in the State of Rhode Island. The mission is to preserve Portuguese heritage in Rhode Island and to promote the contributions of the Portuguese people, culture, and language in the history of RI. Come celebrate with music, dancing, and food!

And the Kids, Vundabar – Friday, June 10th, 2016
Columbus Theatre, Doors at 8 PM, Show at 9 PM

Columbus Theatre presents And The Kids with special guests Vundabar this weekend! And The Kids new album, Friends Share Loverswill be released on June 3, 2016. The Massachusetts trio blends “chunky indie rock, blissful new wave, chamber folk, jarring avant-garde, and brawny classic rock” to create a unique and “euphoric” sound. Vundabar, a “sludgy jangly pop” duo is releasing their new album, Gawk, later this month as well. Tickets available here. All ages welcome.

Holly Miranda – Saturday, June 11th, 2016
Columbus Theatre, Doors at 8 PM, Show at 9 PM

Columbus Theatre will be hosting Holly Miranda this weekend as well!  Miranda has released 3 albums since 2010 and her latest album, Party Trickis a series of covers. Formerly part of the band The Jealous Girlfriends, Miranda has spent more than half her life creating music and touring, more recently breaking out as a solo artist. Tickets available here. Portals: The History of the Future Exhibition – Thursday, June 9th – Sunday, June 12th, 2016
Providence Public Library – 12:30 PM to 5:30 PM on Thursday/Friday, 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM Saturday, 1:00 to 5 PM on Sunday

The Providence Public Library is offering a new exhibition called “Portals: The History of the Future“, which will “highlight the material trails left by the people of the past as they looked to the future.” Visitors will be able to take a look at what the future looked like to our predecessors, and how it varies greatly from the reality we live in today. Admission is free for all ages.

All of Everything: Todd Oldham Fashion – Thursday, June 9th – Sunday, June 10th, 2016
Rhode Island School of Design Museum, 10 AM to 5 PM

The “All of Everything” exhibition features original designs by the talented Todd Oldham. His creative designs, well known embellishment work, superb craftsmanship, and unique flair dominated fashion in the 1990s. From a Swarovski crystal-encrusted ensemble to a Pantone non-repeating print design, this exhibition offers 65 complete ensembles in a wide variety of styles, all labors of Oldham’s “intensive design process” and attention to detail. Trinity Rep Presents: Late Night Catechism The Dowling Theater
Thursday, June 9th at 7:30; Friday, June 10th at 7:30; Saturday, June 11th at 2 PM & 7:30 PM; Sunday, June 12th at 2 PM

Trinity Rep is proud to present: Late Night Catechism, an interactive comedy show that will surely bring back deeply buried memories of catholic school. Taught by “Sister,” Late Night is a “hilarious mix of of comedy, nostalgia, and Catholic dogma in an adult remedial class just for you.” Tickets here.
