Upcoming events for September 8th – 14th

September 21st is the International Day of Peace and the RI Peace Flag Project is celebrating with events all month long. The Pawtucket Arts Festival is also going on this month and this weekend they are presenting the the Slater Mill Fall Festival a family friendly event featuring music, magic, and more. This will also be the last weekend to check out the Providence Flea at their Summer location on South Water Street in Providence and while some of the of the summertime farmers markets are winding down there are plenty to choose from.

Thursday, September 11th

Walk Across RI for Peace and Justice
(8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Join the RI Peace Flag Project as they walk from Westerly to Providence!

Gather in Wilcox Park across from the Episcopal Church at 9am on September 11. There will be a minute of silence to recognize the importance of the day and honor all the lives that have been lost in 13 years.  The walk will be a visible call to our community to work for the justice that peace requires.

Friday, September 12th

The Peace Flag Project’s Peace Art Exhibit
(5:00 – 6:30 p.m.)

Join The Peach Flag Project for Gallery Opening of the Peace Art Exhibit. For the past four years, the Atrium Gallery of the First Unitarian Church has hosted special Peace Art Exhibits, as a part of the September Month of Peace in Rhode Island. The Exhibits are part of this Peace Month and draw attention to art work that focuses on peace.

Saturday, September 13th

Slater Park Fall Festival
(11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.)

The Slater Park Fall Festival will be a weekend that celebrates the beauty of the park – from the Daggett Farm to Looff Carousel, the Rhode Island Watercolor Society and historic Daggett House. This ‘open air market’ features food, craft, exhibitions and performances.

This will the last Providence Flea of the Summer! Join them on the Greenway on South Water Street.The Flea has a vintage theme. Antiques, collectibles, vintage wares, vintage jewelry or clothing, upcycled or recycled items can be found at The Flea.

There are many great events to attend this week; the Providence French Film Festival continues, and we have a Ludovico Ensemble concert, screenings and discussions of several movies, a Giambattista Bodoni exhibit, a performance by The Providence Singers, and as always, the Pawtucket Wintertime Farmers Market. Ludovico Ensemble Concert 8:00pm

Brown University’s Department of Music will present the Ludovico Ensemble Monday night at 8pm. The Ludovico Ensemble was founded in 2002 by Nicholas Tolle and promotes the music the European and American avant-garde movements. The ensemble will premiere two French works that feature the cimbalom: Mark Andre’s “AB I” and Yan Maresz’s “Sul Segno.” This program was made possible through the generous support of The French-American Fund for Contemporary Music.

Tuesday, February 25th

The Loving Story: Screening and Discussion 6:30pm

“The Loving Story” is the last in a four-part series offered by the Center for Slavery and Justice at Brown. The film series is meant to mark the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.’s March on Washington. After a screening of the film, a discussion will be moderated by Africana Studies professor, Francois Hamlin.

 

Wednesday, February 26th

Pawtucket Winter Farmer’s Market 4:00pm

Local food in every season. The chickens are still laying eggs. The salad greens are so leafy and crisp. The onions and garlic are packing spice. Opening Lecture: Giambattista Bodoni Exhibit 6:00pm

The Providence Public Library will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the death of Giambattista Bodoni, one of history’s most important typographers and printers with an exhibition and opening lecture by the eminent typographer, Matthew Carter. The exhibition will be on display through mid-April.

“A Place at the Table”: Screening and Discussion 6:00pm

The Garden Grille, Wildflour Bakery, and the Grance present a community screening and discussion of “A Place at the Table,” a film documenting the issue of hunger in the United States, and offering solutions toward ending the hunger struggle of 50 million Americans each year.

The Providence Singers present Christine Noel, directing three substantive pieces of the classical era by Joseph Haydn & Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart by a chamber orchestra and soloists. Joining the Providence Singers are soloists soprano Teresa Wakim, mezzo-soprano Emily Marvosh, tenor Greg Zavracky, & baritone Nicholas R. Laroche.

WaterFire’s recommendations for September 19-22nd

Burnside Park Music Series

Due to popular demand, and the generous support of Downtown Providence Parks Conservancy sponsors, the Burnside Park Music Series has been extended September 19! This week we welcome Gurpo Sazon to the Burnside Park music stage, a dynamic Latin band that has been featured at WaterFire on two occasion. This is the final evening of the summer music series so get out and check it out. The beer garden is open at 4:30, music begins at 5:30. Free & family-friendly!

Gallery Night Providence

What better way to check out all of the various artists throughout Providence than to check out ‘Gallery Night Providence’! This is a free, fun-filled introduction to Providence’s exciting art scene that is held on the third Thursday of the month, from March through November.

PARK(ing) Day

This annual, worldwide event, encourages artists, designers and citizens to transform metered parking spots, or parking lots, into temporary public parks and works of art. With over 30 participating businesses and organizations participating throughout Providence, this will be a great excuse to get out and walk around town. Perhaps you will discover a new park, an outdoor library, cafe seating, a musical ensemble, an art show, a mini-farmers’ market, you name it. Let’s go PARK(ing)!

Taste Trekkers Food Tourism Conference

Taste Trekkers is the nation’s first food tourism conference and is taking place downtown Providence. This event is specifically designed for people who plan their vacations around food.  This is a great opportunity to experience insight from locally and regionally renown chefs and farmers, wine makers and beer brewers, food bloggers and travel writers, all with one goal: to show you how to explore the world through food. Conference begins on Friday and extends through the weekend.

With events starting at 1:30pm, we have a lot in store for you this evening at WaterFire.  Check out  Rally 4 Recovery‘s annual festival at Roger Williams Memorial Park where you can hear great bands and enjoy other family friendly events.  Stop by the WaterFire Arts Festival Plaza on Washington Street where you can view and purchase locally made glassware, jewelry, paintings, photography, clothing and more. Be sure to stop the College Street Bridge to check out the tent featuring FoodForward, an event brought to you by RallyRI and WaterFire to showcase some of Rhode Island’s food innovators where you can learn more and sample some great products.

Hop on/Hop Off Shuttle helps you get around Providence easier!

The folks over at Experience RI  have introduced a “hop on, hop off” shuttle that travels throughout Providence from 5pm to 1am every Saturday night. Tickets will entitle you to unlimited hop on/hop off service all night long from 6pm – 1am at locations throughout the city. This is a great way to get around Providence and experience all that our charming city has to offer.

Final Summer Pops in the Park

The Philharmonic Pops Orchestra are performing at Slater Park in Pawtucket at 5:30pm, just a quick jaunt North of Providence. This is their final outside concert and should not be missed. Free and family friendly, Slater Park is a beautiful location for listening to an evening concert.
