Memorial Day Weekend ’19

Memorial Day Weekend is right around the corner, and we’re all anticipating how to kick-off summer 2019 in the Ocean State. Whether it’s your first beach trip of the season, or you’re looking to enjoy a weekend of food and art, Rhode Island offers some of the most unique experiences to dive head first into summer.

Be sure to attend the first WaterFire Lighting of the season on May 23rd as we begin to celebrate 25 years of transforming place and building community. 

Parade & Celebration:

On Monday, May 27th the town of North Providence will hold its annual Memorial Day Parade and inaugural Ahlborg Memorial Day 5k.

 

The town of Lincoln will also hold its annual Memorial Day Parade on the 27th, beginning at 11 Am on the corner of Higginson Avenue and Smithfield Avenue .

Bastille Day Ceremony to Honor WWII Veterans – Friday, July 17th @ 6pm

In gratitude the Republic of France is awarding knighthoods in the French Legion of Honor to: John Dunnigan, Raymond Gillis, and Leo Héroux.

The ceremony will be performed by French Consul General Valery Freland accompanied by Rhode Island Honorary Consul to France Roger Begin in front of the Rhode Island World War II Memorial in Memorial Park in Providence, Rhode Island on Bastille Day, Friday, July 14th, 2017 at 6:00 PM.

Rose Weaver will sing The Star Spangled Banner and La Marseillaise. The Ceremony will conclude with a toast from a sabered bottle of Champagne presented by Robert Burke in honor of the RI veterans. Rise and Shine on the Farm at Roger Williams Park Zoo

COCK-A-DOODLE-DO! Join zookeepers in the Alex and Ani Farmyard for a special morning on the farm before the Zoo opens to the public. Enjoy a continental breakfast of bagels, muffins, fruit, yogurt, juices and coffee outside the Farmhouse, and explore the Farmyard as zookeepers get the day started. This event is “free-range,” so guests can go at their own pace to explore the many activities, including the cow milking, egg collection stations, and the produce growing and play station. Watch a sheep shearing demonstration, visit with a beekeeper, watch a farrier trim a donkey’s hooves  and even learn about worm composting with RI Worm Farmers Cooperative.

Cost: $25/members, $35/non-members

Join artist and educator Eric Fulford as he returns to Wild Art! Each class will include a visit to the focus animal, where students will observe the animals’ unique adaptations and form before returning to the classroom to create their works of art. Classes run select Saturdays through June 2017. Themes include Fuzzy Red Pandas, Giraffe Mosaics, River Otter Paintings, Camel Cartoons and Tortoise Sculptures. Breakfast with the Animals at Roger Williams Park Zoo

Marco Polo’s adventure brought him face-to-face with the exotic animals of the Silk Road, and so will yours! Start by dining on a hot buffet, then after breakfast you’ll join zookeepers that care for the animals of Marco Polo’s Adventure Trek in opening for the day; climb into the bear exhibit to prep the space for its occupants, get face-to-face with a camel, see the snow leopards, red pandas, cranes and takin get their first enrichment of the day, and experience the thrill of watching the Zoo come alive.

Join John Reckner, founder of the Jack O Lantern Spectacular at the Roger Williams Park Zoo, and learn the techniques of intricate pumpkin carving.  All workshop attendants get a set of tools, a template and an un-glutted pumpkin.  John will teach the students how to transfer their template to a 3 dimensional Jack O Lantern that can be proudly displayed at home.  Registration deadline extended – so register now.
