Providence is known as the “Creative Capital,” and for good reason. The city is home to many art galleries and museums that display artwork from all over the world. And if you’re visiting at the end of the month, Gallery Night is not to be missed. Every third Thursday of the month, from March to November, galleries across Providence open their doors. This free event, which celebrates art ranging from contemporary multi-media installations to one-of-a-kind functional artworks, is called Gallery Night Providence.
Founded in 2011, Yellow Peril Gallery is a contemporary art gallery located at The Plant, a historic mill complex in the Olneyville neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. The Gallery fosters modern art critiques on popular culture and society from emerging, mid-career and established artists in the United States and abroad. Their inventory comprises of works of art from critically-acclaimed artists who have been featured in biennials and museum exhibitions, participated in top tier art fairs and acquired by private collectors worldwide. Artists represented share their commitment to social responsibility, and 10% from the sale of all artwork is donated to a charitable organization of the Artists’ choice.

Founded in 1880 to stimulate the appreciation of art in the community, the Club has long been a place for artists and art patrons to congregate, create, display and circulate works of art. Located along Thomas Street, in the shadow of the First Baptist Church, the Providence Art Club is a picturesque procession of historic houses, home to studios, galleries and the clubhouse. Through its public programs, its art instruction classes for members and its active exhibition schedule, the Providence Art Club continues a tradition of sponsoring and supporting the visual arts in Providence and throughout Rhode Island.

RISD Museum

The RISD Museum acquires, preserves, exhibits, and interprets works of art and design representing diverse cultures from ancient times to the present. Distinguished by its relationship to the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), the Museum educates and inspires artists, designers, students, scholars, and the general public through exhibitions, programs, and publications. The RISD Museum houses more than 91,000 works of art, ranging from ancient Greek and Roman sculpture to contemporary art in every medium, including textiles, ceramics, glass and furniture. Part of the Rhode Island School of Design, the museum offers a full schedule of special exhibitions, lectures, tours, concerts and other programs.

ArtProv Gallery
ArtProv is a gallery of contemporary art that displays an evocative collection of works centered around color, texture and expression by local, national and international artists. Constructed in a converted loft space in the Jewelry District’s historic Doran Building, ArtProv’s inspired location features three viewing spaces open for private showings.

The Chazan Gallery

Chazan Gallery @ Wheeler is a nonprofit artists’ space which exhibits a wide range of contemporary work by artists living or working in the area. Providence is a city with a very large community of artists, and the gallery provides an excellent space for these artists to exhibit their work. Through an open jury process, the gallery shows work from among the strongest artists in the area in a series of varied and intresting exhibitions each year. Bill Van Siclen, the Providence Journal’s art editor, has called the gallery “a model of quality and consistency. The artists have been among the best the state has to offer.” Located on the East Side of Providence near Brown University and RISD, the gallery is totally supported by Wheeler School, a gift to the Providence arts community from the school.
GRIN is a contemporary art gallery located at The Plant in the historic Olneyville District of Providence, Rhode Island. Directed by Corey Oberlander and Lindsey Stapleton, GRIN was founded in 2013 as a space for artists to develop and exhibit their work, with a steady curatorial hand.
The David Winton Bell Gallery is Brown University’s contemporary art gallery and home to an important part of the university’s permanent art collection. The gallery hosts four to five major exhibitions each year, as well as annual exhibitions of student artwork and a triennial exhibition of artwork by Brown faculty members.
The Dryden Gallery at Providence Picture Frame stands as the city’s largest and most versatile space of its kind. It is comprised of two distinctly structured, equally appealing venues. The ground floor Red Gallery is an intimate setting ideal for showcasing individual artists, while the Grand Gallery encompasses the cavernous third floor of one of Providence’s most celebrated restored mill buildings. Providence Picture Frame, in continuous operation since 1889, is the oldest and largest frame store in New England. Dryden Gallery manifests its commitment to support, provide common ground for, and indeed celebrate local visual artists and their peers from all points of the compass.

The Atwells Ave. location currently displays an extensive and diverse selection of small-to-medium-sized original Fine Art works (paintings, photographs, drawings, glass, sculptures, collages, assemblages) from Gallery Z‘s deep stable of Fine Artists: locally, nationally or internationally renowned, along with a selection of jewelry, pottery and unusual specialty handicrafts from Armenia and around the world.
The Haffenreffer Museum of Anthropology is Brown University’s teaching museum. A resource across the university, we inspire creative and critical thinking about culture by fostering interdisciplinary understanding of the material world. The museum offers exhibits, public lectures, performances, symposia, festivals, and a broad range of programs and events for all ages.

Peter Miller Fine Art Photography Gallery
Peter Miller Fine Art (PMFA) photography gallery opened in March 2015 in Providence, Rhode Island. The gallery is the only venue dedicated exclusively to fine art photography in Providence and Southern New England.

AS220 offers artists opportunities to live, work, exhibit and/or perform in its facilities, which include several rotating gallery spaces, a performance stage, a black-box theater, a print shop, a darkroom and media arts lab, a fabrication and electronics lab, a dance studio, a youth program focusing on youth under state care and in the juvenile detention facilities, four dozen affordable live/work studios for artists, and a bar and restaurant.

Providence has a well known historical neighborhood known as College Hill. Throughout this neighborhood, there are plenty of different museums and historical houses for your to explore during your trip to Providence! Henry Lippitt, Rhode Island Governor from 1875-1877, designed and built this historic Victorian spectacle in 1865. Since then, generations of the Lippitt family occupied the house for almost 115 years. Today, it is open to the public as a historic representation of the Victorian Era. The John Brown House
John Brown constructed this house in the late 1700’s. As a prominent family at the time and one of the early benefactors to Brown University, it is said that many famous politicians, such as George Washington, have visited the house on multiple occasions. In 1942, The Brown Family donated the house to the Rhode Island Historical Society for preservation. Today, you can take guided tours of the John Brown House. There are five former State Houses in Rhode Island that still survive. Most specifically, this historic structure on Benefit Street in Providence, gained its name “The Old State House” after the new State House on Smith Hill was built in 1901.
Benefit Street: A Mile of History
Enjoy a walking tour of one of the most historic streets in Providence. Throughout the summer, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. enjoy historic Providence with a walking tour of the College Hill Neighborhood. The tour begins at the John Brown House and explores many other 18th and 19th century homes.

The Rhode Island Historical Society
Want to learn about Rhode Island’s history, but don’t know where to begin? Then you should definitely stop by the Rhode Island Historical Society. This building is home to 5,000 manuscripts, 100,000 books, and 400,000 photographs. It is the fourth oldest state historical society in the entire United States! You won’t want to miss this.
Slater Mill – Pawtucket, RI
In 1793, a local firm brainstormed and built a mill on the basis of the idea that they would be able to manufacture items solely by waterpower. Hence, Slater Mill was created as the first successful cotton spinning factory in the United States. In 1921, a group of business men came together to purchase Slater Mill and restore it as a piece of Rhode Island’s history. Tickets to tour the museum must be purchased online here.
The Providence Athenaeum is Providence’s own historic library. This member-supported library is free and open to the public. It has been open to several famous writers in the past such as Edgar Allen Poe and HP Lovecraft.
The State House
Rhode Island’s State House offers free guided tours year-round. Come see the third largest unsupported dome structure in the world!
Downtown Pawtucket Historic Walking Tour
Take a self-guided tour of downtown historic Pawtucket, Rhode Island! The tour features over 40 different historic sites throughout the city. Some of the stops along the tour include, the Old Pawtucket Post Office, Slater Mill Historic Site, and Pawtucket City Hall.

Gaspee Day at the John Brown House John Brown, the Providence merchant who promoted the attack on the Gaspee, later built and resided in a magnificent 18th century mansion. The John Brown House Museum at 52 Power Street will be open from 10 a.m. – 7:30 p.m. with guided tours at 10:30 a.m., noon, 1:30 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 4:30 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. Self-guided audio tours are available on a first-come, first-served basis. We will emphasize John Brown’s role as organizer of the Gaspee event and will make sure that everyone sees the painting in the museum that records the burning of the Gaspee. 10:00 a.m- 7:30 p.m.

Gather in Wilcox Park across from the Episcopal Church at 9am on September 11. There will be a minute of silence to recognize the importance of the day and honor all the lives that have been lost in 13 years. The walk will be a visible call to our community to work for the justice that peace requires.

For the past four years, the Atrium Gallery of the First Unitarian Church has hosted special Peace Art Exhibits, as a part of the September Month of Peace in Rhode Island. The Exhibits are part of this Peace Month and draw attention to art work that focuses on peace.

Audible Spaces presents three sound installations that encourage participants to explore the subtleties of listening. Tristan Perich, Zarouhie Abdalian, and [The User] have each created immersive environments using seemingly uniform sounds that dissolve into tonal, tactile, and temporal variations as participants engage with them.
The funniest show on earth is coming to spread laughter and merriment throughout the kingdom of Matunuck! Monty Python’s SPAMALOT, the outrageous musical comedy lovingly ripped off from the film classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail, tells the story of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table as they embark on their quest for the Holy Grail. Flying cows, killer rabbits, taunting Frenchmen and show-stopping musical numbers are just a few of the reasons audiences are eating up SPAMALOT.
Join the Providence Public Library every first and third Tuesday of each month for a free guided tour of the historic building.
The Library opened this classic Venetian Renaissance building in March 1900. Now on the National Register of Historic Places, the Library is a prime example of turn-of-the-century American architecture.
Join us in the Waterplace Park Basin for an intimate lighting of WaterFire Providence. The fires will be lit shortly after sunset (7:14pm) and will remain lit until 11:00pm. The WaterFire Lighting Ceremony will take place at sunset along with a 100 torch Ring of Fire surrounding the basin. Sponsored in part by the Federal Bar Association: Rhode Island Chapter.

4th Annual Rhode Island Seafood Festival

Rhode Island’s premiere seafood festival hosting the best seafood in all of Rhode Island and southern New England. Restaurants, food distributors, breweries, wineries, local companies, artists and non-profit organizations will be present at the event to promote their products, service or cause and celebrate the end of the summer. There will be live music playing at “The Pier Stage” throughout the event.
Make sure to head over to India Point Park in Providence, Rhode Island for the 4th Annual Rhode Island Seafood Festival. FREE ATTENDANCE! Make sure to come down and enjoy some of the states freshest and finest seafood along with some great live music on the pier stage! Continues on Sunday, September 7th from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Join us on the Greenway every Sunday through September 14th from 10 am – 4 pm on South Water Street. The Providence Flea has a vintage theme. A small and carefully selected group of local artists’ and artisans’ wares, and local, independent service providers can also be found at The Flea.
On September 7th, Providence Hoot and InDowncity will be hosting an open air and open mic night at Grant’s Block. At each event they’ll be joined by Bolt Coffee Company, serving excellent iced coffee and Macaron Millie, the mobile trike of Ellie’s Bakery who’ll have delicious French macaron ice cream sandwiches. Seating is limited at Grant’s Block so make sure to bring your favorite picnic blanket or camping/beach/kitchen chair.
This week is filled with lots of live musical performances as well as storytime for the kids. Sit back, relax, and enjoy what the local music scene has to offer!

Come to Storytime and Art in the Park: BIG NAZO this Thursday, July 24th and enjoy child-centered art from local performers and artists! Then, join Ricky Katowicz for “Art in the Park: Maurice Sendak’s Wild World!” free face painting, a mobile playground, and the free green grass of the park keep kids of all ages entertained. Grab lunch from the food truck market for a picnic in the park!

This week, The Bread Lab presents jazz pianist Travis Colby. Join them this Thursday, July 24th for an after work celebration of food, music, and cocktails! Live music will be playing from 6-8pm, plus $5 cocktails and food specials. All ages, kid-friendly, no cover!
Join us for the Concerts under the Elms, an annual outdoor summer concert series held Thursdays under the canopy of elms at the John Brown House Museum. Tickets are $10, free for RIHS members and children under 12.
Located on Washington Street in the heart of the WaterFire installation, the Arts Festival Plaza is a showcase for local artists and crafts-people. From photography and sculpture, paintings and hand-crafted ceramics, to jewelry and specialty textiles, the WaterFire Arts Festival Plaza features a wide range of locally crafted artisan wares to exhibit for sale to WaterFire’s visitors.
Bring a lawn chair, a blanket, and maybe even a picnic dinner and sit on the lawn at the beautiful Roger Williams National Memorial and enjoy FREE concerts by some of the best songwriters Rhode Island has to offer. Check out performances by Jesse and Jack Gauthier, Dan Lilley and Scatman, Lisa Markovich, and Bethel Steele.
On Saturday, July 26th 2014, Gilead Sciences will sponsor a WaterFire Providence full lighting. The lighting will begin at sunset, around 8:11pm. We will have resource fairs and screening tents for Hepatitis C located on College Street, in collaboration with RI Defeats Hepatitis C.

The Sunday “Opera in the Park” series will be held at Hopkins Park at the intersection of Branch Avenue & Charles Street in Providence, RI. Hopkins Park provides a great venue with plenty of room for families to enjoy a free concert. Bring your lawn chairs and blankets and enjoy the music!
